Using African American Newspapers to Fill Gaps in the Historical Record

Workshop Series: Genealogy and Local History

Black Americans were systematically excluded from the historical record for most of our nation's history. Until the latter part of the twentieth century, accounts of the lives of ordinary African Americans were largely absent from mainstream newspapers, government documents and other corporate records. With the availability of digitized historical black newspapers, genealogists and historians can now begin to reconstruct the lives of African Americans in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Register online at Parkland College Community Education (select Recreation and Leisure), by mail, or in person at Parkland College, or pick up an application form in the Champaign County Historical Archives at The Urbana Free Library, 210 West Green Street, Urbana.
