Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library

When: Monday, November 23, 2009 - 9:00 AM

This hands-on class, held at the State Library, will cover the information seeking behaviors of consumers. It will also address the recommended core reference collection, as well as databases and newsletters/ periodicals. It will cover the reference interview, disclaimers, and privacy as well as networking with medical librarians. The class will introduce the students to the Medical Library Association and its local chapters. It will describe possible ways to market this service in a community.

The objectives in this course are to cover some of the steps involved in providing patrons health information in a public library setting. The following steps will be covered:

* Background information on health-seeking behavior
* The Health Reference Interview
* Collection Development
* Networking and Marketing Ideas

Teen Programming/Summer Reading Videoconference

When: Tuesday, December 01, 2009 - 9:30 AM

This Teen Programming/Summer Reading Video Conference will include three different topics.

Morning Session: 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
The morning session will focus on Summer Reading including the State Theme and not using the State Theme. You will have lunch on your own.

Afternoon Session: 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
The afternoon will start with Rollie Welch giving a teen literature update. The last presentation will be Paul Bolino of Coleman Behavior Health discussing how to talk to teens including when to refer them to someone else and identifying signs of depression.

Presented by SERLS, SWON, NEO and NORWELD and co-sponsored with State Library of Ohio.

Summer Reading Workshop 2010: Make a Splash--Read! (SWON)

Come for ideas related to the state theme on School Visits, Games, Crafts, Decorations, and Subject Ideas including Pond Life, Pirates, Ocean Life, Beach Ideas and Water Fun.

Please Note: This workshop is to assist librarians planning summer reading programs for preschool children up to and including elementary-aged children. For planning for tweens and teens, you must attend that workshop which will be held December 1st via videoconference.
