Elaine Goodale Eastman: Sister to the Sioux, In Her Own Words:
Terry Swanson will present the story of the first white woman to teach Dakota and Lakota students at South Dakota reservations. While working at the Pine Ridge Reservation at the time of the Wounded Knee Massacre, Elaine Goodale fell in love with Dr. Charles Eastman, a Native American medical doctor who was the physician at the reservation during the tragedy. They married in 1891 and moved to St. Paul in 1893 where they lived until 1897. During this period, Elaine and Charles began to write and publish children’s stories.
Terry Swanson is a historian and recently retired manager of the Gibbs Farm historic site.
