 The preeminent military figure in Michigan before the Civil War, A.S. Williams led Union troops at the bloody battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, then transferred West for service in the capture of Atlanta, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas Campaign that wrapped up the War. Civil War historian, Jack Dempsey, presents the story of Williamsí life based on his 2019 biography of this great Michigander.
