Event Details

At the height of World War II, Detroit was thrown into total turmoil for three days. The city’s riot was one of the nation’s worst civil disturbances, with 34 killed and over $2 million in property damage. The riot threatened war production, but more importantly, it also revealed a level of racial discord that continued to plague the city for generations. Come listen to Dr. Karen Miller, Associate Professor at Oakland University, as she speaks about the Riots of 1943. This program is part of the Great Michigan Read, which has chosen the book, "X" by Ilyasah Shabazz. Open to Teens and Adults. The Great Michigan Read is presented by the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Event Type(s): Adult Programs
