Event Details

One title, one state and thousands engaged in literary discussion. This year's Great Michigan Read selection is "X: A Novel" by Ilyasah Shabazz with Kekla Magoon. This book explores the Michigan roots of Malcolm X, including the early life experiences, both good and bad, that molded him into one of the most prominent leaders of the twentieth century. In this book discussion, we will look at recurring themes and perspectives found in the book, how the story compares to real events that occurred in Malcolm X's life, and how Malcolm X's experiences shaped his worldview, as well as other topics. Free copies of the book will be available to program participants courtesy of the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Please pick up a copy from the Adult Reference Desk after registration. Light refreshments provided. Open to Teens and Adults. The Great Michigan Read is presented by the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
