Most people know that "West Side Story" was created as a modern story telling of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", but did you know that Disney's "The Lion King" borrowed a great deal from "Hamlet", or that the popular rom-coms "Ten Things I Hate About You" and "She's the Man" were inspired by "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Twelfth Night"? Shakespeare has inspired generations of writers, including the likes of Margaret Atwood, Christopher Moore, James Thurber, Mark Twain, John Updike, David Sedaris, and much more.
The Shakespeare Theatre of NJ is pleased to announced the launch of a new community outreach program for the summer. The "Shrewd Mechanicals" inaugural performance will be "Shakespeare Gumbo", an exciting collection of moments and music form Shakespeare's great canon of plays, as well as selections from some of the profound, witty, and light-hearted works his plays have inspired over the centuries. Directed by Artistic Director Bonnie J. Monte, this 60-minute presentation has something for every audience. Don't miss this taut four-member ensemble as they bring to life the joy, wit, poetry, and music of the world's greatest playwright - and those he's inspired.
