On November 4, 2008, Michigan voters approved the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, providing protections for the use of medical marijuana in the state. As the law has taken effect, issues have arisen for both the law enforcement and medicalcommunities. There are still questions about the safety of using marijuana, especially for teens and young adults. The Chelsea District Library has invited a
panel of local and national experts to speak about the issues of medical marijuana, and take audience questions.
Our Panelists:
Phyllis M. Boniface, M.D. is a specialist in Adult Neuropsychiatry and
Psychopharmacology. She works with patients who have been using medical marijuana at Psychiatry Experts of Ann Arbor, P.C.
Ed Toth is the Police Chief for the city of Chelsea.
Donald R Vereen, Jr. M.D., M.P.H. is the Director of Community Academic Engagement at the Prevention Research Center of the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is the former Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy during the Clinton Administration. Prior to that, he served as
Special Assistant to the Director for Medical Affairs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Mark A. Weiner, M.D. is a specialist in Internal Medicine, and an expert in Addiction Medicine, and Pain Medicine. He has experience working with patients who are using medical marijuana for pain and nausea control. His office, Pain Recovery Solutions, is in Ann Arbor, MI.
