Hancock author Sandy Phippen will read and discuss his new book, Sturge: A Memoir, at the Blue Hill Public Library on Thursday, August 7th at 7:00 PM. The book is about Sturgis Haskins, a native of Sorrento, Maine, who died in 2012, and who was a “Downeast original,” competitive sailor, photographer, author, historian, and donor to many New England museums. He was also an early advocate for gay rights in Maine.Click here for directions
Haskins' lifelong friend Sandy Phippen edited Haskins' essays, talks, emails, internet posts and letters to create this memoir. Phippen was born in White Plains, NY and raised in Hancock, Maine where he graduated from Sumner Memorial High. He earned his B.A. from the University of Maine and his M.A. in English Education from Syracuse University. An English teacher for 50 years at both the high school and college levels, he has received the Distinguished Teacher Award from Bowdoin College and Teacher of the Year from Orono High School. He was also a finalist in the Maine Teacher of the Year program in 2004.
