Exhibit: Field and Feathers (Ongoing Event)

Event Type: Library-sponsored Adult Event
Date: 10/2/2019 - 10/30/2019
Description:
Retired art professor and part-time Blue Hill resident Gale Flax will exhibit her work in a show titled Field and Feathers at the Blue Hill Public Library in October, starting Wednesday October 2nd. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday October 4th, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM.

About the exhibit Gale says, “It includes my experiments in printmaking from specimens collected on my daily walks in Blue Hill and in Norfolk, Virginia. This series started as a sort of botanical journal inspired by 19th and 20th Century naturalists’ notebooks, particularly those of the photographers Anna Atkins and Blossfeldt.”

The majority of her botanical specimens are presented as copper plate etchings made directly from an impression of a leaf in a soft ground. But there are two dry-point engravings using zinc plates, a wood engraving, a linoleum block print, and a digital print. The bird drawings are primarily based on photographs of songbirds and shorebirds in Virginia.

Gale Brownlow Flax is a retired art professor, now working as an independent artist in Cologne, Germany. She grew up in Blue Hill, and still draws inspiration from its woods and shores.

The show will be in the library’s Britton Gallery and Roland Howard Room, available for viewing during library hours subject to the Howard Room schedule. For more information contact the library at 374-5515.
