In the spirit of reducing waste and teaching new skills to the community, the library is hosting a monthly "Fixit Clinic" on the first Saturday of the month until summer. The idea is to coach people in the community to disassemble and troubleshoot a variety of items, such as appliances, bicycles, jewelry, clothing, toys, electronics and, well, whatever.Click here for directions
Fixit Clinic is a "pop-up" activity where people bring their broken things to disassemble: many participants have never attempted opening up something before, and often tools are necessary to get inside. Fixit Coaches help guide participants through their disassembly process, and have some tools on hand. Fixit Clinic conveys basic disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair skills using peoples' own broken things as the vehicle. By sharing these skills while transferring them to others, everyone learns critical thinking through the lens of our relationship to consumption and sustainability. Our experience is that fixing many broken items is possible, even easy. But even if the item isn't fixed, there's a valuable educational aspect to understanding why it stopped working.
Fixit Clinic is staffed by volunteer Fixit Coaches and is not a hands-off free repair service. Fixit Clinic is a troubleshooting and discovery workshop: you are expected to actively participate in the disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair of your item so that you leave fully empowered to share your new-found confidence and insight with your friends, neighbors, and the community at large. Repair is not assured: while we will do our best to help you, any specific item can have issues that make it unrepairable or we can exacerbate the problem during our attempts to repair it.
Fixit Clinic is a nationwide effort that celebrates repair through all-ages do-it-together hands-on fix-n-learn community-based discovery. For more information on Fixit Clinics, see www.fixitclinic.org. People who want to participate as a "coach" can contact the library at 374-5515 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
