Colloquy Downeast: Bioluminescence: Myth, Mystique and Science

Event Type: Colloquy Downeast
Date: 2/21/2019, 2/28/2019, 3/7/2019, 3/14/2019
Start Time: 3:00 PM
End Time: 5:00 PM
In this colloquy we will explore the occurrence, the stories and the scientific explanations and use of bioluminescence (the production of visible light by living organisms). Early observations and explanations of foxfire, maritime phosphorescence, fireflies and other dramatic living, cold, night light were often tied to mystical events or beings. We will explore the poetic and artistic expressions of these phenomena and learn about their biological explanation and their potential and uses as tools in art, medicine and research.
