Russia has been in the news a lot lately with revelations of possible interference in US elections. But what is really going on in Russia? Professor Singleton will present an overview of current events in Russia. Dr. Singleton explains, “Vladimir Putin wants to make Russia great again. He uses history and myth to promote military nationalism, state authority, conservative religious values, and hostility toward the United States. He speaks of restoring ‘the Russian world.’ Patriotic Russians respond, filling the streets to celebrate annexation of Crimea, but are uncertain about their future.”
At the University of Maine, Dr. Singleton teaches courses on international security, US foreign policy, Russia, and Eurasia. He received his B.A. in Russian History and Literature at Harvard, and his Ph.D. in Political Science at Yale. He has lived in Tanzania, Russia, Ecuador, and Vietnam, and consulted in China, Mongolia, and Bolivia. For many years his research focused on Soviet and Russian relations with countries in Asia and Africa.
Seth Singleton lives in Mount Desert, where he enjoys sailing, hiking, splitting wood, shoveling snow, and serving on the town Warrant Committee. This presentation is free and open to everyone. For more information contact the library at 374-5515.
