Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adults, Seniors, Teens - Adults
Date: 10/24/2020
Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Time: 3:30 PM
Description:
Join us for a virtual Zoom program to learn more about your female ancestors!

Rescheduled from March due to COVID-19 and now offered virtually, this will be our first Find Your Ancestors program of the season!

Women throughout U.S. history have ‘lost their identity’ by taking their husbands name when they married. Prior to the 20th century, most historical records were written about and for men. This workshop will help you identify the varieties of source material that can help you break through that brick wall. You will also learn the many reasons why women are harder to trace and how legal and social status affected this. In examining lesser used sources – including ephemera such as letters and diaries – you can unlock your female ancestor’s identity. In honor of Women’s History Month we will also examine why women’s stories are as important as men’s – or maybe more!

This program will be the second of three programs in our Women's History Month celebration during the month of March.

About our speaker:
Mary Risseeuw has been researching 19th & 20th Century Dutch immigration to Wisconsin and the Midwest for 30 years. She has lectured throughout the Midwest and the Netherlands on the subject. She writes on a variety of historical subjects and has taught genealogy classes for many years. She is a board member of AADAS (Association for the Advancement of Dutch American Studies).
