On fourteen panels that draw largely on images and resources from the MKI Library and Archives, the exhibit covers German migration and settlement in Wisconsin, questions of ethnicity and identity in newly forged communities, and the cohesiveness of these communities over the decades, especially in times of economic crisis or war. Specific topics include language; print culture; religion; Amish and Mennonites; traditions and social clubs; education; rural and urban life; business; political and civic engagement; times of war; and immigrants and their descendants in the global world, past and present. This project has been made possible by a Major Grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. Free and open to the public. To coincide with the exhibit, learn more about your German (or other immigrant) ancestors on Saturday, Dec. 7th at 2 pm as we welcome Deb Anderson from UW-Green Bay's Archives and Area Research Center. Anderson will provide strategies for finding your immigrant ancestors, the process of becoming a citizen and what records were generated during the process. We also invite you to take a survey related to your exhibit experience. Stop by the Information or Reference Desk for a survey. Location: First Floor Exhibit |
