Description:
In this presentation, author Ben Mikaelsen discusses his difficulties as a child learning to read and write English as a second language. Growing up in South American boarding schools gave Ben firsthand experience with educational systems where rote knowledge and absolute discipline were revered. Thirty years of escaping the attitudes and limitations instilled during this rigid period gave Ben a new perspective on education. His insights will help teachers, librarians and parents to better understand the needs of their At-Risk students.

Winner of the International Reading Association Award and the Western Writer's Golden Spur Award, Ben Mikealsen is the author of the novels Petey, Touching Spirit Bear and many more. Ben shares his passion for helping youth find their own special qualities and supporting Bully-Free zones.
